Beso-beso and hugs!

November 21, 2009

I am a touch person.  I know that, even FB knows that.  Here in Thailand, though, people do the “wai” for greetings.  Hands in prayer position (is that what we call that? Like kids praying in Kindergarten… aw you know what I mean! LOL) and say, “Sawatdii kha!” or “Sawatdii Khap” for women and men, respectively.  We do not even shake hands.  Two months later, I am getting the hang of it.  Hmm.. but I miss the usual beso-beso, the hugs and even the handshake!  Like, let me remember… I think I have not shaken a person’s hands for at least a month!  But I did give a hug to someone.  It happened three Sundays ago in church.  We were requested to pray for people who came to the front for prayer.  As I was praying for this lady,  I just sensed that she needed to forgive some people who hurt her badly as a child.  As I told her that with the aid of an interpreter, she began to weep.  That time I did not care if it was a cultural thing or not:  I hugged her.  With people looking on, I just hugged her.  Just when I thought of letting go, I hugged all the more.  The more I did, the more she wept and flowed in total surrender to God’s love.  With all due respect, I love the Thai culture and I do not intend to change it.  But for me, I still believe that every single person needs a hug or just a pat on the back.  I love doing the “wai”, but really, inside me, I am longing more of the usual Pinoy beso-beso and hugs!
